5 AC System Sounds You Don’t Want to Hear
You want your air conditioning unit to perform at its peak for as long as possible, but the fact is that it will develop problems as it ages. Even a brand-new system will do this. Fortunately, a malfunctioning system, be it a packaged AC system or a heat pump, can emit certain sounds that can alert owners to a problem. The following are just five you should watch out for.
1. Rattling and Banging
Rattling almost always signifies a loose part within the AC unit. Coming from the exterior, a rattling sound may point to the presence of debris in the vents, including leaves and twigs. Another possibility is that the motor bearings are failing. As the problem grows, it may create more of a banging noise.
The pistons of a bad AC compressor may grind against each other, or the sound could be caused by a broken belt in the blower fan.
The former is especially unwelcome because AC compressors are costly to replace. When such a problem arises, we at Brennan Heating & Air Conditioning often recommend that our customers get a new AC altogether. Replacements are something we handle with care and professionalism in homes across Lynnwood.
All that might be required to eliminate continual squealing sounds is to lubricate the blower motor unit. In some cases, though, the noise may be due to a bad blower motor or a worn blower motor belt.
4. Hissing and Whistling
These sounds, when continuous, are the usual signs of a leak. Hissing would mean there’s a refrigerant leak, while whistling would mean air is leaking through a hole in the ductwork.
An AC system normally clicks when shutting on and off, but clicking throughout its operation is a bad sign. You may need your relay or control replaced.
