Does My Furnace Really Need a Filter?

February 3, 2019

As the chill of winter sets in, one of your best friends becomes an easily overlooked appliance: your furnace. Your furnace takes care of you by keeping your home warm and inviting, so it’s only fair that you return the favor and perform some basic maintenance. One of the most important items on the list: making sure it has a new, clean filter.

The Purpose

Your furnace filter acts like a shield to protect your furnace from ingesting contaminants. Without a filter dirt, dust, hair, and anything else floating through your home will find its way to the blower fan and clog up the whole operation. This can cause serious damage to the whole system and shorten the lifespan of your furnace, so if you’re not excited about shopping for a new furnace, make sure you have a filter in place. All that dirt and grime will also make the whole system less efficient, meaning you’ll pay more for the same amount of heat. That’s not the most exciting way to spend your money.

The Consequences

If you neglect the filter and let those contaminants get into your furnace, they’ll be pushed back into your house for you to breathe. That’s gross for anyone, but it can be a real problem for anyone with respiratory issues. Besides, dust that gets spit out of your vents will also land on furniture and other surfaces, which means more time spent dusting and cleaning up. Operating your furnace without a filter is costly, inefficient, and potentially dangerous. Replacing the filter periodically so that it remains clean and effective is almost just as important. A dirty filter can’t do its job well enough to keep your furnace running at the top of its game.
