Why Should I Have My Water Heater Flushed Yearly?

January 1, 2020

Water heater manufacturers and plumbers recommend that you should have your water heater flushed once a year. There are four reasons for this, and we’ve outlined them below.

1. Your Water Is No Longer as Hot

Sediment builds up on the bottom of your water heater. This eventually results in the heater no longer being able to penetrate it to heat your water to the same degree it once did. Flushing your water heater removes this sediment.

2. Your Energy Bill Is Higher

Since your water heater must work harder to heat water due to built-up sediment, it runs more often and with more difficulty than it should. This results in higher energy bills.

3. Leaking Water Heater

The inside of a water heater has a lining that prevents the interior surface from rusting. If the water heater is always running due to built-up sediment, it can cause the tank to overheat and rupture. Brennan Heating & Air Conditioning has offices in Lynnwood and Seattle, and we help people who have had their water heater burst.

4. Water Damage

If your water heater bursts, it can lead to severe water damage as 60 to 80 gallons of water spread inside your home. It can be very expensive to have this cleaned up and any damage repaired.

Have Your Water Heater Flushed Annually

It’s for these reasons that you should have your water heater flushed once a year. The plumber will also inspect the water heater during their visit to make sure it is operating efficiently. The cost of having this work done is far less than the cost of dealing with a rupture caused by lack of maintenance.
